I direct the RNCM YOUNG HARPS project, which is a series of FREE workshops for harpists under 18. We meet at the Royal Northern College of Music, twice a term, from 10 - 1 on a Sunday.
There are guest tutors who work on different topics with the emphasis on playing in an ensemble - and having fun.
All standards welcome; from beginners to post Grade 8.
There is also plenty of cake during the break, and then a short performance for parents at the end of the morning. Just bring your harp, and join in.
Contact email@example.com to book your place.
I have been teaching at the RNCM for the past 25+ years and I am Head of the Harp Department. More information on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as the Saturday Junior RNCM, is available on www.rncm.ac.uk You can contact me directly to receive an information sheet, or to arrange a consultation lesson.
There are Open Days where you can watch lessons/concerts, meet Staff and current students, ask all your questions. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience a day at the RNCM. The next Open Day for the Senior College will be on Tuesday April 21st 2020. It is FREE, but you need to register your place: firstname.lastname@example.org
For the JRNCM, the next Open Day will be in February 2020. In the meantime, you can also arrange a visit on a Saturday by contacting email@example.com
All harpists receive weekly lessons from me, concentrating on technique, repertoire, orchestral excerpts, performance skills, teaching practice. There are regular performance classes and chamber music coaching. Students arrange social harp events from curry nights to visits to the Ballet! Every harpist is also involved with RNCM Young Harps and are members of the RNCM Harp Ensemble.
Each term there are Visiting Tutors. These include
Anne Denholm (Official harpist to HRH Prince Charles/Hermes Experiment)
Helen Davies-Mikkelborg (Solo/Chamber artist, Denmark)
Geraldine O’Doherty (Principal Harp, R.T.E Orchestra, Dublin)
Marie-Pierre Langlamet (Principal Harp, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra)
Maria-Luisa Rayan (International Soloist, Chicago)
Katerina Kitsou (Head of Harp, Thessaloniki Conservatoire, Greece)
Catherine White (Royal Academy of Music)
Louise Thomson (Tashmina Solo Artist)
We have welcomed a wide range of Specialist tutors: Park Stickney (Jazz), Catriona McKay (from Folk to Classical), Siobhan Armstrong (Baroque), Elizabeth Fontaine-Binoche (French Repertoire), Elizabeth McNulty (Preparing for Orchestral Auditions), Marie Leenhardt (Alexander Technique), Mary Dunsford (Music in Health), Keziah Thomas (British Music), Rhodri Davies (Extended Techniques).
There are external performance opportunities, and a wealth of experience in Opera, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, New Ensemble, Brand New Ensemble, Big Band and Session Orchestra - to name but a few ensembles. Every harpist gets the chance to perform in orchestras regularly, which is fantastic experience for the years ahead. In addition, harpists can audition for the Professional Experience Scheme (PES), where they can work alongside the Principal Harp of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
Here are some photo highlights from the RNCM Harp Department to give you a flavour of our work here. Enjoy!
